A Hohmann retractor pulls back bone and tissue when you're working on joints and bones, but a Meyerding one is built for spine surgery where you need to hold back muscles really deep inside. Think of it this way one is for surface bone work, and the other one reaches down deep to get at the spine.

The blade has little teeth on it that grab onto muscles so it doesn't slip off while you're pulling back. Those teeth basically bite into the muscle and keep everything in place, making your job easier and keeping the surgical area open and clear.

A good quality retractor made from steel can last forever if you take care of it many hospitals use the same ones for 10, 20, or even 30 years. Just rinse it clean right after surgery and it'll keep working great for decades without needing replacement.

You get a bunch of options depending on what you need there's seven-inch models with tiny blades like 1/8" or 1/4" wide for smaller jobs, medium ones at 3/16" to 3/8" for regular work, and the bigger 10½-inch version with a 3/4" by 6" blade when you're doing major spine work.
